Getting ready for the Bridge Race!

Category: Uncategorized

This Sunday I will be running in the YMCA International Bridge Race 10k. ¬†I am really looking forward to this run, as I am no longer scared of the 10k distance, lol :) ¬†Plus, it’s over the Bluewater Bridge connecting Port Huron and Sarnia, so the view will be amazing. ¬†I think it is also important to solidify our ties to the U.S., and not all they do is bad, really and truly. ¬†I remember going to Port Huron all the time as a kid to get gas, breakfast with the family on Sundays and go to the mall, and of course, the London Dairy Bar… omg… best place for ice cream treats EVER!!!I have connected with the Running Room which holds free running groups every Wednesday night. ¬†There were about 30 runners in different age groups and distances. ¬†I ran with the half marathon group (they offer clinics to train for different races) and it was nice to talk to fellow runners and make some new friends. ¬†I was really sore on Thursday, and didn’t think I would make it to 2 pitch, but I did, and had fun playing on a diamond on our native reserve here, Aamnjiwang. ¬†There were a lot of natives playing, and they really had a good time, I mean, they were smoking as they batted, LOL :)I have noticed my mood is a lot better, even though things haven’t always been the easiest for me lately, but meeting new people, maintaining my active lifestyle, and even being able to hang out with my parents is making me, well, Happy!Going to eat dinner now, and then go out to First Friday, a cultural tradition in Sarnia where artists get together in the downtown and host different events, music, art, photography and much more! ¬†Then, tomorrow is Artwalk, organized by a friend of mine who is into sustainability and community building. ¬†Going to be a great weekend!!!¬†

Reflections and Biking

Category: Uncategorized

It’s been a while since an update so here goes!Firstly, the last several weeks have been very trying for me, with my work situation and things out of my control. ¬†I have been trying to deal with things as best I can, but it is hard, and there have been times where I question what I am doing, and where I am, at 30 and no career, just a lot of education. ¬†I can’t even get a real job. ¬†It’s nice on one hand to have free time to train but I am at a point in my life where I want to contribute to society in a meaningful way. ¬†Argh… I have never faced this much adversity before, and it feels depressing. ¬†I still have 1 year left of Naturopathic College, and I’m not sure when to finish it. ¬†My dad doesn’t support me and that really sucks, especially since I’m currently living at home. ¬†So yeah, that’s where I’m at.In training news, I met up with a friend and we biked together to Forest and back on Thursday. ¬†It is an 80 k round trip, and we left at 9:00 and got back just before 1:00, with a coffee and muffin stop in Forest. ¬†And an ice cream bar (Hagendaz, YUM :) at my corner store. ¬†Food tastes SO much better when you are really hungry, wow!! ¬†We had a headwind the whole way home which sucked, but I was really impressed with how my stamina held up as compared to my first trip to Forest, which we actually turned around 5 k from Forest. ¬†My friend Rob adjusted my seat, and also did some work on the chain at his home which was very nice. ¬†I am glad to have met him!I haven’t really hit the gym that much the last week or so, spending more time playing 2 pitch on Tuesdays and Thursdays and basketball as well. ¬†The YMCA International Bridge Race (10k) is coming up on Sunday June 8, which I am running with my little brother Sam, and then the Father’s Day 10k at Huron Boys Home, so the fun doesn’t stop! ¬†Wee!!later skaterz, I’m off to Paddy’s for some beer, music and dancing!have a good weekend!¬†

Alvinston Watford 16k Road Race

Category: Uncategorized

I ran the 16k today.  I finished 48th/104, in a time of 1:26:29, which beat my goal of 1:30 :D  I was SO happy!  The race itself was a real chore, it was all pavement, travelling north and into the wind, with some rolling hills.  It was a cool day, prob 12 deg celsius or so.  I wore 4 layers and my track pants, but the heat I generated had me considering heat exhaustion at times.  They had water at 2km intervals, and I took a walk break at all stations.  Right off the start, I got winded and took a bit to get my proper pace.  I was happy with my overall pace, doing the first 6km at a pace of 1km/5min.  The last 6km, my pace dropped to 1km/6min.  Around the 13 or 14k mark, all the runners from the 8km race merged onto our route, and it was fun passing them all!!  That was cool :D  I sprinted for the finish with everything I had and the marshall had to grab me to stop, which I did not like :(  I cheered for everyone else coming in, had prob the best tasting orange in my life :) and listened to the awards ceremony and the drove home, super exhausted, and after some soup, promptly slept for 4 hours :)My stats: Race time 1:26:29, 48th/104  19th/33 in my age category (30-44) and would have been 11th/24 if I was 29 (15-29).  Best time was 1:02 and last was 1:57.  4 girls beat me, boo :( This was a great experience, really pushing me to the limit. At times, I wanted to walk, but I kept going, pushing myself all the way.  Next race is the Bridge Race 10k on June 8.

Prep for the 16k Watford to Alvinston Road Race

Category: Uncategorized

I am going to be running in a 16k road race on Victoria Day. ¬†This will be a real test since it will be outdoors, in real-time conditions, and it’s 16k, goddammit!!The longest I have run is 5k outdoors. ¬†I am aiming for a pace of 1km / 6 min or 90 min for the race. ¬†I plan on carbo loading on Sunday, with a light bike ride with my lil bro. ¬†On Friday, I had a massive workout, tried a lot of new stuff esp. with the stability ball, which was, well, weird but good :) I did a little bit of everything, including some b-ball, 5 min high intensity biking, free weights, machines, upper, lower and everything in between, lol :)Now I’m off for a night on the town! Wish me luck for the road race!!¬†

slow day

Category: Uncategorized

i had a very relaxing day, other than getting a cavity filled and the freezing :X:X:X.  Was in the car today, a wet one here, and spent prob 3 hours napping in the aft before making my way to the Y.  Did a light upper body, with stretching and played basketball.  Saw this boxing class going CrAzY!!! OMG, a room full of girls viciously attacking the punching bags, wow, I am glad i was on the other side, of the wall, lol. Great sauna, little hot tub and a great cold shower!  lamb chops for dinner, and asparagus, yum :)

Recoverty and Upper Body

Category: Uncategorized

After I did my 10k training run on Tuesday, I spent Wed cycling around Sarnia, eating a lot, spending some time at my fav coffee shop, and then got a work out in the late afternoon, little basketball and upper body. ¬†Also experimented with the glute-ham raise machine and got some help with it. ¬†I don’t usually ask for help, but someone offered :)I am happy with my progress, am benching 3 sets of 6 @ 140 lbs. ¬†130 lb pec press, push and pull ups are pretty easy. ¬†I would like to work on more stability exercises with the balls, and maybe shift more attention to core. ¬†Right now, my core is 60 supine crunches with a medicine ball that I hold in my arms and extend them.¬†¬†I also got a rear tire guard and 2 lights for my bike. ¬†And listened to some weird experimental music for free at the library, and had lamb gyro and greek salad for dinner. ¬†With a Ceasar, nice drink :)¬†

First 10k training run

Category: Running

So, I am training for a couple of 10k runs that end of May and June as well as a duathlon in July, and I ran my first measured 10k run at the Y on a treadmill. ¬†I did interval training (1m medium, 1 min fast, 1 min recovery) for the duration, stopping to take drinks every 10 min. ¬†Some stats: My average pace was approx. 1 km / 6 min. ¬†Total time = 54 min. ¬†Each interval (total of 20) was 500m and 180 s long. ¬†I ran slightly uphill for 1/4 of the distance to make up for the water breaks. ¬†I didn’t look at calories burned, but based on my usual 30 min interval training, I would est. aroun 1000-1200, and I was famished after the distance, and slightly dizzy. ¬†Lots of stretching, to cool down, although I’ve never needed to stretch much, and then I enjoyed a Soprano sandwich and Italian wedding soup, with mango/peach fruit juice! :):):) with a friend from church at a coffee shop.Going to do upper body today! ¬†I’m on my bike as transport today, and going to see some free, live music at the library tonight :) ¬†And just finished 5th in a poker tourney, out of 63 players. I won $18, lol :D¬†

Back to Basics

I spent 3 or so hours at the Y today. ¬†It was SO nice to see all the changes they have done, some new machines, paint job, different setup. ¬†I worked on upper body, benching 120 lbs seems too easy now, I think I will step the weight up next time, and decrease reps from 10 to 6. ¬†I use normal, wide and narrow grips for 3 sets. ¬†Pec deck at 130 lbs for 3 sets of 10. ¬†Then incline flys at 16 kg, followed by some back exercises with the cables. ¬†Pull ups, tri push ups, crunches, and push-ups to finish. ¬†Then I played b-ball in the gym, my shot sucks :( … swimming, sauna, steam room, cold showers, and then a bike ride home in the rain, which was actually fun, since it was warm and my endorphins were flowing :)

Goodwill 8 km walk

Category: Uncategorized

After all the recent cycling I’ve been doing, and lower body work in the gym, it was nice to take it relatively easy and participate in the Goodwill Industries walk in beautiful Point Edward. ¬†Sadly, my lil bro Sam wasn’t able to come :( but I did meet a couple other kids and played with them (one of them found a rubber ball which was fun to kick around :). ¬†It was a beautiful day for a walk by the lake, under the bridges, thru Canatara Park and finishing with pizza by Boston Pizza, yum! ¬†I ended up doing some light jogging, and found the most amazing bmx bike path ever, which I will be checking out later on my trail bike, yay!¬†It’s been a very stressful time for me the last few weeks, with work and caddy girls :( so it was nice to spend a quiet afternoon walking and being with myself.¬†

April 30th Leg Workout

Category: Uncategorized

As I had biked 65 km a couple days before, I wanted to get to the gym to do some light lower body strength conditioning. ¬†I did a few sets each of leg extensions, leg curls, no leg presses due to YMCA renovations, as well as bicep curls, and my usual 60 reps of supine leg crunches/overhead arm lifts with a weighted ball for core. ¬†I may have done some push ups, can’t recall. ¬†Detox was the standard sauna, cold shower, steam room, cold shower, hot tub, cold shower for cool down. ¬†¬†I was feeling pretty tired, but a good tired after the workout. ¬†The pork chops for supper were SO good :)¬†
